Look Who’s Going to RT: Kim Harrison

Kim HarrisonCan you introduce yourself to my readers a little?
I’m Kim Harrison, best known for penning the Hollows series (Dead Witch Walking). I grew up reading science fiction and fairytales, which means my office has high tech do-dads and a fairy garden both. I recently moved back to my home state of Michigan after a ten year stint down in South Carolina, and it feels good to be home–even with the snow and cold we got this year. I’ve been writing for over twenty years, more than half of that published, and a good day is still one where there is nothing to distract me from my keyboard.

I’m very active with my readers, and can be found at: Website | Blog | Facebook | Twitter | GoodReads | Wattpad (Something new I’m trying out, and it looks promising!)

Can you introduce us to the world(s) that you have created?
I originally got my start writing more traditional fantasy for one of the big six publishers under the name Dawn Cook, and there are two series still floating around that I’m as proud of now as the day they first touched the shelves: The Truth (First TruthHidden TruthForgotten TruthLost Truth) and Decoy Princess series (The Decoy PrincessPrincess at Sea). I’ve also written YA with the Madison Avery series (Once Dead, Twice ShyEarly to Death, Early to RiseSomething Deadly This Way Comeswhich is about a girl accidentally becoming the grim reaper and what she does to try to get out of it. There’s even a couple of graphic novels (Blood Crime/Blood Work) and a four color, illustrated coffee table book that is my Great Work, (The Hollows Insider) But what I’m best known for is the Hollows series, a fast-paced, somewhat snarky urban fantasy that sprawls across the modern-day Cincinnati skyline. We’re on book 12 of 13, and I’m already hard at work at what comes after Rachel, Trent, Ivy, and Jenks’s final story.

Will this be your first RT or are you a veteran? Any advice for those who are going for the first time?
This is not my first RT, no. I think it’s my third or fourth, but it’s spread out over a decade, so I’m excited to get back and see how things have changed–and what hasn’t. My favorite advice for a first-timer would have to be to wear comfortable shoes and bring an extra suitcase for the books you’re going to go back with. Wow! But do wear comfortable shoes . . .

Are you speaking on any panels during RT? Are there any you are looking forward to or are planning on attending?
I am going to be speaking on a few panels, but I don’t know what they are quite yet at the time of writing this. I’m in the lucky place of being able to tag along with a lot of the Avon authors, (Urban fantasy isn’t romance, and I feel terribly out of place at times.) and it’s easier to let my publicist wedge me in somewhere where they need an extra panelist.

Update: Kim has received her RT schedule!

Is there anything in particular you’re looking forward to or experiencing while in New Orleans?
I’ve never been to New Orleans, and I’ll admit that I’m a bit squeamish. New Orleans has a rep for being spooky, and I’ve read too many fairytales to be comfortable walking around in the dark amid the ether down there. Ideas follow me like puppies, and if they are scary ones, I will be haunted for days.

If someone were wanting to meet up with you at RT, who should they look for?
The best way to find me at RT is to find my husband, Guy. I’m sure to be about ten steps away. He’s got a wonderfully clean shaven skull and he sticks out in a room full of ladies. We’ve actually overheard people say, “Oh, there’s Guy. Kim must be here.”

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
