The Trouble with Magic by M. Alt

I just finished The Trouble with Magic by Madelyn Alt, who happens to be one of my new authors for the year. The premise revolves around a 30something woman, Maggie, who was just laid off of her job and starts to work for a self-proclaimed witch, Felicity, in her antiques shop. On her first day of work, Felicity is questioned over the death of her sister and Maggie struggles to believe that she is guilty. Throughout the whole book, Maggie runs around town trying to find who the murderer is and learn to accept that, maybe she too, has some extra senses as well.

Overall, the book was good, but it’s not really making me rush out to get the next one in the series. I don’t know if I’m in a reading slump or not, but this book just didn’t capture my mind like some others have. I didn’t feel enthralled with the story or the characters. I was able to put it down for days at a time and then go back to it. I want to say it took me over a week to read a 261 page book. When I’m interested in a story, I can read a 400 page book in just under 2 days. Again, the books was good, but I don’t know if I would recommend it to anyone. I can think of other novels that are far better.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. This series is ok but lacks MAGIC!!! Sure there are a few bits here and there but it isn’t really witchy at all.

However I have to admit I still put the new books on my pre-order list. I do like a nice cosy mystery now and again and Madelyn Alt is a good writer.
