The Halloween themed anthology Entangled contains novellas by authors I know and love, and by authors I have yet to try. A few years ago, I tried reading a book by Nancy Haddock but just couldn’t get into it. So I was really surprised when I was completely sucked into her novella, Medium Rare, and left wanting more.
What’s spooking the spirits of St. Augustine? As the witching hour of Halloween approaches, ghost seer Colleen Cotton must team with a by-the-book paranormal investigator to locate the one ghost who can save the city’s specters. If she fails, her own great grandfather’s spirit may be lost forever.
Medium Rare was a fun, light read, full of history, a hint of mystery, hot, sexual tension and of course, lots of ghosts.
There was enough of a back story for Colleen that I couldn’t tell if she, along with the rest of the characters from Medium Rare, were from their own series or if they were created simply for Entangled. After doing a little cursory research, I’m pretty sure they were created for Entangled, but since I haven’t read any of Haddock’s books, I can’t say for sure. Although, I for one, would love to read more about Colleen and her handsome ghost investigator, Brick.
The plot centralized around Colleen figuring out why all the ghosts in St. Augustine were scared of one pirate ghost and how she and Brick were going to save them all. My only complaint was that the final battle between Colleen and the ghosts was too short, ending before it really got started. It felt almost anti-climactic after everything that led up to that point. Otherwise, Medium Rare was my favorite novella in Entangled, so far.
If that doesn’t entice you to try out Entangled, then I should add that all proceeds are being donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. A totally worthy cause and all the more reason for you to go out a buy this anthology!
