NaNoWriMo – 25,000 words down

morgajel's word countTwo weeks before November, my manager told me I had to schedule the rest of my time off for the year – they needed to know to schedule projects around it. When I sat down to calculate which days to take off, I found I had a lot of time to burn. With NaNoWriMo on my mind, I decided to take the first week of November off. It was a good decision.

The target is 1700 words a day – at 5 days in I should be be around 8500 words.  Instead, I’m now sitting on a pile of 25,000 glorious words. That’s 5000 words per day – way above what I’d hoped to get (I was aiming for 3000/day). It’s only Wednesday, and I’m halfway done with the original NaNo challenge – 50,000 words.

I do have a few things in my corner – a plot that I’d been sitting on since 2003, a well developed main character, a flexible format, and a fully fleshed-out outline. I can’t tell you how much the outline helps. When you know where the story will go 80% of the time, the words just flow out. But don’t worry, that 20% is still there, waiting to surprise you.

Now before you get too excited for me, I should tell you that I’ve put a lot of effort into my outline so I have a general idea of how far I am. My book is broken into 12 sections. I’ve completed the two shortest sections of the book, each one was around 12,500 words. At this rate the book will be 3 times the target number, probably more. So, while I’ve come a long way quickly, the battle isn’t even close to being over.

  1. Woah Woah Woah…this isn’t me writing guys. Jesse is doing NaNoWriMo and he’s been doing posts here at LE. I don’t have the author tag on since he’s not around all that much, but maybe I should start having him sign his posts. :)

  2. Jackie, I told you that you last time that you needed to include the intro paragraph like the first post I did- I was even going to warn you to do that (I left a few blank lines at the top to remind myself) but ended up going to sleep instead.

Oh well. I’m just happy to keep the wordcount up.

  3. YOU ROCK!!!! I am so envious…I have typed nothing but giberish!

  4. Even though you say it’s nowhere near being complete, I’m still jealous of your 25,000 words. (Which I’m allowed to be since I only have about 14,000 under my belt.) LOL

Seriously though, niiiice. Good work and keep it up!
